Abstract:
Plant Research International has released a new strawberry cultivar ‘Pavana’ from its successful breeding program. ‘Pavana’ is a late variety with a mid-harvest date which is on average four days later than that of ‘Elsanta’. This variety has shiny, conical and bright red fruits with a fresh green, slightly sunken calyx.
The first fruits can occasionally be longitudinally grooved, but in general the fruit setting is good.
The fruits are very juicy, a little acerbic but very firm.
The plants are large, and have an open growth habit with long flower clusters that make the fruit easy to pick. ‘Pavana’ has three resistance genes against red core, which means the chance of infection with red core is extremely slim.
Furthermore this variety has a good resistance against crown rot. ‘Pavana’ also appears to be less sensitive than ‘Elsanta’ to Verticillium wilt and mildew on the leaves.
This variety is protected by plant breeders’ rights and traded under license.
Furthermore Plant Research International has three new promising selections in trial.
9801: a selection that performed well in a continuos culture.
9802: a mid-season strawberry a very uniform berries and good flavour.
9803: a late strawberry selection with very large primary fruits, firm flesh and good flavour.
