Abstract:
Since 1996 HRI East Malling has released five new strawberry cultivars, four are June-bearing and one is everbearing.
BOLERO (1996) is an everbearer that crops from August to October.
The berries are firm with a bright, attractive colour, regular shape, glossy skin and good shelf life.
Plants are vigorous and moderately resistant to Verticillium dahliae and Phytophthora cactorum. FLORENCE (1997) is a mid-late June-bearer.
Plants are productive and the berries are large and firm with a deep red colour and sweet flavour.
Florence has useful levels of resistance to Sphaerotheca macularis, V. dahliae and P. cactorum and some tolerance to Otiorhynchus sulcatus. SOPHIE (1997) is a late June-bearer with the same fruiting period as Pandora.
Plants are vigorous, very productive and do not require a pollinator cultivar.
The berries are attractive with a regular shape, strong red colour and glossy skin finish.
ROSIE (1999) is an early June-bearer, cropping 7-10 days before Elsanta.
Plants are moderately vigorous and the berries are large with a very regular conical shape.
The fruit has a strong red colour, glossy skin finish and a sweet, aromatic flavour.
ALICE (2000) is a mid-late June-bearer with a long season.
Harvesting typically begins 7 days after Elsanta but continues for approximately 2 weeks after Elsanta has finished.
Plants are moderately vigorous and productive with large fruit size.
The berries are firm with an orange red colour and sweet flavour.
Alice has some resistance to V. dahliae and P. cactorum.
