Abstract:
The strawberry research program at the University of Ancona is aiming to develop breeding and biotechnology studies with the objective to promote its production in the mid - Adriatic cultivation area. For the first 3 years of the breeding program were evaluated 27.565 seedlings from which are now under study 103 selections showing interesting agronomic characteristics associated to an high adaptability to these culture conditions. Among the most promising selections AN93.371.53 and 58 (EM 483 x 87.734.3) were characterised by a very late production, at least one week later then Idea, and interesting productive performance. If these important characters will be confirmed in different cultivation areas they could represent an interesting material for extending the late ripening season. Furthermore, the selection AN94.153.51 (Granda x Miss) emerged for the same harvesting season and productivity of Idea but with improved characteristics, manly for the fruit: higher size and firmness, red lucent colour, fair good taste. Furthermore, the selections 93.231.53 and 54 (88.346.1 x EM 258) are evaluated with interest because almost of the same ripening season of Idea, the first of better quality, while the second with of red bright colour, long conical shape and high berry weight. The breeding program included also some inter-specific crosses within Fragaria virginiana glauca and some important Italian cultivated varieties (Marmolada, Miss and Don), from were also isolated some interesting selections.
