Abstract:
The province of Quebec is located in eastern Canada just north of the American states of Vermont and New York. The province is an important producer of strawberries especially for fresh and pick-your-own markets. The Quebec strawberry breeding program was initiated in 1982 to provide Quebec growers with new cultivars adapted to local growing conditions that include harsh winters and hot and humid summers. The breeding program has been responsible for the release of several June-bearing strawberry cultivars that have found some acceptance among Quebec growers (Chambly (1989), Oka (1992), Joliette (1996), L’Acadie (1999), Yamaska (1999) and L’Authentique Orléans (2000)). The program has expanded considerably in the last few years thanks to support from private partners and now includes the following projects: breeding early season June-bearing cultivars, breeding day-neutral cultivars, breeding cultivars for wine production and the study of antioxidants in fruits in relation to fruit conservation and nutritional quality.
