DATA MODELLING FOR DATABASE DESIGN IN APPLE PRODUCTION MONITORING SYSTEMS FOR A PRODUCER ORGANIZATION

Abstract:
Monitoring systems are increasingly used in agriculture. They require carefully designed databases. In this paper, we present general rules of data modelling based on the analysis of the semantic structure of information and their application to the construction of a basic data model. Such a model is not the database structure; a single model can be translated into different database structures.
The model provides a sound basis for a database scheme that prevents redundancy and supports applications in apple production monitoring systems at the level of a Producer Organization (PO). The model refers to information sets at either the plot or the farm level, including yield, fruit size and quality, history of the orchard (time of planting, cultivar choice and training system, …), and fertilization for the former, type, number and surface of apple and other commodities for the latter.
The model allows in particular the traceability of fruits from the individual plots to the commercial lots assembled by the PO.
