A PROCEDURE FOR CALCULATING STORAGE LIFE OF HAYWARD KIWIFRUIT

Authors:   J. Feng, B.R. MacKay, K.M. Maguire
Keywords:   Fruit softening, days after harvest, exponential model, prediction
Abstract:
Fruit softening is a major limiting factor of storage life of Hayward kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa (A.Chev) C.F. Liang et A.R. Ferguson ‘Hayward’). Storage life, expressed as days from harvest to the date when fruit reached an average firmness of 11.8 N, is difficult to estimate. Current methods of fitting a straight line between points prior to and after softening to the threshold or tri-phasic curves are prone to error. Fruit softening was monitored on fruit from 9 different growers at monthly intervals during storage. Fruit firmness measured for storage duration greater than 3 months was exponentially related to days after harvest. A comparison of the relative predictive abilities of the exponential and straight-line models is presented.
