A COMPUTATIONALLY EFFICIENT MODEL OF LAMB CARCASS ANATOMY FOR IMPROVED CARCASS ASSESSMENT

Abstract:
An anatomically accurate, computationally efficient model of a lamb carcass has been developed. X-ray computed tomography was used to capture detailed anatomical data. The major bones and muscle groups were digitised then bicubic Hermite surface meshes were fitted to the data. This ‘generic’ carcass model can be customised to represent individual carcasses using data from one or more of a variety of measurement technologies. It is possible to use a much smaller, more critical set of measurements from any carcass and adjust or customise the ‘generic’ model to the new shape in question. This customisation would allow the components of each carcass to be characterised, providing information for making better grading decisions or for controlling automated disassembly processes. One method of customisation is to use a small number of surface markers at anatomical reference points. The ‘generic’ model is embedded in a host mesh which is then deformed using a linear fitting process to match the anatomical markers on the ‘generic’ model with those measured from an actual carcass. This process is quick and shows good potential as a way of customising the ‘generic’ model for on-line carcass assessment.
