MODEL DEVELOPMENT FOR WAREHOUSING AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS IN THE FOOD INDUSTRY

Author:   L. Schulze

Abstract:
For the food-producing industry, apart from the appeal of products, it is also logistic performance that offers a competitive edge in supplying the customers. More and more customers demand an improvement of the quality of logistics. Meanwhile, the order pattern of customers is changing constantly. The order volumes per individual order are getting smaller, while ordering frequency is increasing. It is against this backdrop that warehouse and distribution logistics are of particular importance.
The planning of warehouse and distribution systems for the food industry requires a comprehensive know-how. On the one-hand, available time for planning is getting shorter and shorter, on the other hand, however, the planning task keeps getting more complex. The visualisation and simulation of planning results contributes to fulfilling the extending requirements as regards planning. In this context, a tool was developed that automates the first step in the process of model generation on the basis of calculation results. In a second step, the interactive model development, i.e. the interaction between computer and planner, is given profound support.
The generated models offer the basis for the plant and process visualisation. However, they can also be used as an import for a simulation system. In the framework of one application in the field the modelling of a complex warehouse and distribution system with the purpose of visualisation and simulation contributed to shortening planning processes, improving the quality of results and creating acceptance for a new concept at an early point in time.
