APPLICATION OF WATER PINCH ANALYSIS TO A DAIRY PLANT

Authors:   S.-F. Peng, M. Farid, T. Wilks
Keywords:   linear and non-linear programming, water and wastewater minimization, diary industry, milk powder, whey protein
Abstract:
This paper addresses the application of water pinch technology to the dairy industry with an example illustrated by a real plant analysis, using a software package called WaterTarget developed by Linhoff March. Results generated by Water Target were assessed for their practicality and suitability as possible modifications for the Kiwi Diaries plants. The plants, which were analyzed for water minimization were the powder and whey products plants. The final solution saw a reduction in fresh water intake by 60% and correspondingly a 65% reduction in effluent discharge. There were also significant reductions in contaminant loading as well. As the processes were batch processes, the solution required the addition of storage silos and new piping connections. The estimated capital cost of the improvement project was around NZD$1 million.
