| Abstract:
Apples and pears are the most important temperate fruit trees cultivated in India, with 227 679 ha and 38 539 ha, respectively, followed by stone fruits with 110 000 ha. Introduced cultivars are widely cultivated but national breeding programs are now generating improved varieties with good adaptation to local condition and quality. Even though there are large differences among growers, most of them use old traditional practices and yields are relatively low. Research and extension are providing support to increase production efficiency. | |
