| Abstract:
Native pecans {Carya illinoensis (Wangenh) K. Koch} grow wild in the riverbanks of the semiarid-subtropical regions of Central Mexico, as in the Estorax river in Peñamiller, Qro. Pecans are dichogamous and native populations are heterozygous and heterogeneous. These populations represent the southern edge of distribution of the species in subtropical environments. Unfortunately, there is no information about their genetic diversity although it may be a unique source of variability that could allow a better understanding of the evolution of the species in the subtropics and a strong background for breeding. The objective of this research was to characterize native pecan selections in Central Mexico, based in nut quality traits. 145 nut samples were collected through several regional shows from 1995 to 1997. High heterogeneity was detected for horticultural traits such as percent kernel, nut size and shape, kernel color, shelling easiness and nut stability during storage. Outstanding selections included 63-96, 79-96, and 14-97. | |
