Abstract:
Leaf nitrogen (N) concentration, gas exchange including photosynthesis (Pn), and terminal shoot growth of ‘Fuji’ apple (Malus domestica Borkh.) trees on three rootstocks, Budagovski 9 (B.9), Ottawa 3, and East Malling-Long Ashton 7 (M.7 EMLA) were studied under field conditions in 1998 and 1999. Rootstock affected shoot leaf Pn rates, leaf mineral concentrations, and tree growth.
Trees on B.9 showed lower shoot leaf Pn rates than those on other rootstocks.
Shoot leaves of trees on B.9 had higher Mn but lower leaf K concentrations than those on other rootstocks.
Shoot leaves of trees on M.7 EMLA had the highest Mg, K, and Cu concentrations but the lowest Ca concentration in both experimental years.
Shoot leaves of trees on Ottawa 3 had significantly lower Cu concentrations than other rootstocks.
Lengths of limbs and terminal shoots of trees on B.9 rootstock appeared to be smaller and those on M.7 EMLA were longer than other rootstocks in both years.
