Abstract:
Highbush blueberries, Vaccinium corymbosum L., were grown in sandy soils enriched with organic matter in a relation 1 : 1 by volume in a range of pH 4.0 to 5.0 in 0.1 Mol.
KCl.
For new perspectives in the cultivation of highbush blueberries, container experiments were conducted with mineral soils using the “CULTAN“-system.
Localised pockets of about 200 ml soil/peat mixtures in a relation 1 : 1 by volume enriched with ammonium sulphate and minor elements were placed in the root zone of the blueberries.
Ammonium and minor elements were taken up by the blueberries from the edges to the center of these localised pockets, the other nutrients such as phosphate, potassium, calcium and magnesium were available from the mineral soils.
To evaluate the experiments, in addition to foliar nutrient analysis, the growth of the plants was classified.
Preliminary results of the experiments conducted in 40 l containers were as follows:
- The status of blueberries fertilized according to common recommendations is unstable.
- Nitrate as nitrogen source promotes chlorosis in bluberries.
- By the “CULTAN“– system vigorous blueberries can be grown on normal agricultural soils.
