ISHS Acta Horticulturae 563: International Conference on Environmental Problems Associated with Nitrogen Fertilisation of Field Grown Vegetable Crops

PLANT-SAP ANALYSIS IN VEGETABLES - A TOOL TO DECIDE ON NITROGEN TOP DRESSING

Authors:   D. Matthäus, C. Gysi
Keywords:   plant-sap analysis, N-min soil analysis, nitrogen fertiliser recommendation
Abstract:
A recommendation system for nitrogen top dressing that uses the nitrate concentration in the sap of the petiole of mature vegetable leaves, as an indicator of the nutrient status at distinct growth stages of vegetables, is presented. A comparison of two recommendation systems, one based on soil analysis, the other based on plant-sap analysis, not only shows the high variability in both systems, but also an acceptable coincidence of top dressing recommendations based on the two systems. Plant-sap analysis could replace or be considered as complementary to N-min analysis.
