Abstract:
This research work reports a study of impact selection of oranges.
Firmness was obtained through the Hertz Contact Stress Theory by compression of single fruits and by impact tests.
An apparatus was constructed to measure the elapsed impact time, capable of carrying the selection process faster than by compression.
Impact tests also yielded values for coefficient of restitution.
Viscoelastic effects and total soluble solids content were considered.
Comparison of results indicates that the impact selection is possible and reliable.
