MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF PACKED ORANGES

Authors:   I.M. Dal Fabbro, A.W. Linares, R.F. Abraão, C.V. Pasos
Keywords:   Volumetric arrangement, orange pack.
Abstract:
This research work reports the mechanical behavior of packed oranges. Individual oranges were submitted to uni-axial load, generating force-deformation curves, from which it was possible to obtain the modulus of elasticity through the Hertz Contact Stress Theory.
That theory was again used to calculate the force and deformation at the contact point of two oranges, by considering the segment joining the centers of the fruits as a truss member. A finite element model was written in order to give a proper interpretation for considering non-linear relations of force and deformation in bi and tri-dimensional orange arrangements. The computer program ANSYS 5.2 was then used in parallel with the written program as matter of comparison. The pack of oranges was theoretically loaded in the axial direction and the resulting force and deformation in the contact area compared with experimental data as well as with literature data.
