Abstract:
The importance of pollination to sustainable agriculture is widely recognised and entrenched in international mechanisms for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and United Nation Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) are both concerned because of a general decline in pollination by natural pollinators.
The CBD's activities are concerned with the conservation and sustainable use of pollinator biodiversity and FAO's interest is in pollination as an essential ecosystem service.
ECOPORT (www.ecoport.org), an Internet site, has started an International Pollination Newsletter: PollenBytes, a pollination database and unique information delivery system.
The process is inclusive and individuals and institutions were invited to become involved in the process.
