ISHS Acta Horticulturae 561: VIII International Symposium on Pollination - Pollination: Integrator of Crops and Native Plant Systems

MODELLING THE IMPACT ON FITNESS OF LEVEL OF PHENOLOGICAL SYNCHRONY BETWEEN SPECIES IN A POLLINATION MUTUALISM

Author:   J.M. Olesen
Keywords:   Bombus terrestris; Corydalis cava; flower foraging; mutualism; range margin
Abstract:
Through simulation, I studied how well-tuned phenologically the interaction was between the herb Corydalis Cava and its pollinating bumblebee species. As measures of plant and bee fitness, I used a fraction of flowers pollinated and number of flower visits made by bumblebee queens, respectively. The phenologies of flowering and bee activity were displaced relative to each other and the fitness consequences measure. Fitness of both mutualists was found to be fairly robust to such displacements and almost at a maximum for both mutualists under their real settings in nature.
