ISHS Acta Horticulturae 560: IV International Symposium on In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding

MINERAL UPTAKE BY BANANA (Musa acuminata L.) EXPLANT IN VITRO

Author:   M.E. Amiri
Keywords:   banana, diffusion, mineral uptake, tissue culture
Abstract:
Growth and the rate of multiplication of banana (Musa acuminata Var. Dwarf Cavendish) in vitro are thought to be associated with the rate of mineral availability and mineral uptake. The growth increase of banana explants is assumed to be related to the rate of mineral uptake during culture especially at the first month. The mineral uptake is proportional to the mineral availability. Mineral availability is influenced by mineral diffusion and diffusion is the dominant process in mineral availability in vitro. Low rate diffusion of minerals through the gelled medium is main reason for their low uptake and their deficiency in vitro.
