Abstract:
Most tissue culture media are based on the Murashige-Skoog medium for their mineral composition.
Adaptation of the macromineral composition of the medium to that of the plant might result in better growth.
We examined this in Gerbera and other species.
We compared the growth on MS-based media, DKW-based media (resembling more the plant composition than MS) and media adapted to the macromineral composition of the plant. Gerbera showed better growth rates on adapted medium than on MS, whereas the multiplication factor was lower on DKW than on adapted medium.
We conclude that adapted medium performed better than the DKW and MS media for Gerbera. For other species similar, positive results for adapted media were obtained.
