DNA MARKERS FOR DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF PLANT BREEDING RESEARCH AND ITS APPLICATIONS

Author:   H. Nybom
Keywords:   Discrimination of genotypes, gene tagging, genome mapping, genetic variation, systematics
Abstract:
DNA based methods are now being applied to a wide range of research projects, including e.g. gene tagging, genome mapping, discrimination among specific genotype., estimation of genetic variation and systematics. These methods include mainly DNA sequencing, RFLP and various PCR-based techniques like RAPD, AFLP, SCAR and microsatellite DNA analysis. Choice of method must take the specific research goals into consideration as well as costs, equipment and technical skills required. An optimal marker system may be found for simple and straightforward tasks, whereas a combination of different marker systems is often more informative in complex research projects.
