| Abstract:
The number of nodes produced by an intact axillary bud of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38 is a function of its position on the stem. The highest buds produce the fewest nodes. Grafting, rooting, and wounding experiments demonstrated that buds respond to information from the main axis of the plant and that the state of differentiation of the tissues connecting the bud with the main axis as well as the actual position of the bud on the stem are important in determining the developmental response of the bud. | |
