Abstract:
The aim of the test was to verify the cultivation of gladioli in NFT as an alternative to soil sterilization to control the root fungal pathogens.
Two trials were carried out in different years; the first was planted on 20/11/97, the second on 14/10/98 using bulbs calibre 12-14 cm of the Mascagni, Peter pears and White friendship hybrids.
A nutrient solution was used, calibrated according to the needs of the specie.
During the cycle the necessary biometrics readings were taken to define the behaviour of the hybrids.
The gladioli showed a good adaptability to the NFT cultivation producing good quality stems during the two winter trials.
In both experiments stem and spike length was high: 134 and 39 cm as average in the first trial and 146 and 44 cm as average in the second trial.
In the first year, statistical analysis did not show any differences between hybrids whereas in the second trial Peter pears and White friendship produced stems and spikes significatively longer than Mascagni.
Among the hybrids in trial the longest spike was produced by Peter pears (48,9 cm).
