Abstract:
The ban on methyl bromide as a soil fumigant will force the Mediterranean growers to look for alternative growing methods.
Hydroponics may save water and fertilisers, but it may also increase the risk of rapid dispersal of root-infecting pathogens.
The objective of the described study was to optimise the slow filtration technique.
In a joint experiment, executed on two sites, six materials (fine sand, “local” sand, glass wool, two types of rock wool granulate and poly urethane foam) were tested as filter media at two filtration rates (100 and 300 L.m-2.h-1). The efficacy was tested by inoculating the pathogens Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. lycopersici, F. oxysporum f.sp. cyclaminis and Xanthomonas campestris. The main factors "Pathogen", "Filter Medium" and "Filtration Rate" had only slight effects on the efficiency rate.
