Abstract:
We developed a lighting system using prism light guides and electrodeless discharge lamps and used this system in a plant growth chamber. A prism light guide is a type of hollow light guide. The average light ray propagates mainly through air in the hollow light distribution structure. The light is guided by means of numerous optical interactions before exiting. Because the luminous part of the lighting system is kept separate from the light source, thermal radiation from the luminous part is less than would be received directly from the lamp. We investigated growth and leaf temperature of tomato seedlings in the chamber. The dry weight of tomato seedlings grown in the chamber with the prism light guide was greater than seedlings grown in a conventional chamber because the prism light chamber can supply high photosynthetic photon flux (PPF). Moreover, leaf temperature during the photoperiod increased less in the prism light guide chamber than in the conventional chamber.
