COMPARISON OF THE DIFFERENT MULCHING MATERIALS ON THE GROWTH, YIELD AND QUALITY OF CUCUMBER (CUCUMIS SATIVUS L.)

Author:   M. Hallidri
Keywords:   cucumber, mulching, growth, yield, quality
Abstract:
An experiment in plastic greenhouse was conducted to study the response of ‘SHEKULLI’ F1 hybrid parthenocarpic cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) to target different mulching materials. There was a significant difference in plant height and number of leaves between treatments. The plant height and the number of leaves of the plants in black film mulching, silver film mulching and transparent film mulching were higher than control (no mulching), while stem diameter showed no significance difference. The cucumber mulched with black film registered the highest plant height and number of leaves followed by transparent film, silver film, wheat straw and the last was the control. There was no significant difference between treatment in total yield but results were not the same regarding the early production. Cucumber cultivated with transparent film gave the highest number of fruits per plant and the highest yield within 30 first days of harvest. The highest soil temperature in 10 and 30 cm depth was obtained with the black film. In plastic house production, the use of black film mulching may improve vegetative growth and earlyness of cucumber.
