Abstract:
Two independent experiments were carried out with 5 triploid red and yellow flesh watermelon cvs. In experiment 1, the watermelon plants were sprayed with 2,4-D amine with a concentration of 8 mg/l and 1000 l of solution/ha. In experiment 2, 6 female flowers of each plant were treated with CPPU (N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea). Both experiments produced high yields (7.6-9.2 kg/m2 in experiment 1 and 7.5-10.6 kg/m2 in experiment 2) with no difference in the yield between cvs. In general terms, experiment 1 produced smaller size fruits but with a higher °Brix than those obtained in experiment 2. In experiment 2, there were statistically significant differences between line 8507, with yellow flesh, and the other red flesh cvs tested for fruit set (p≤0.05), with higher rates in red flesh cvs.
