Abstract:
The grafting of seedless watermelon cvs usually gives rise to an increase in fruit weight, which represents a negative factor for their commercialisation.
In this experiment the influence on the fruit weight, the yield and other productive parameters of the fruit set, induced via applications of doses of 100 mg/l of CPPU (N-(2-chloro-4-pyridyl)-N-phenylurea) to the female flower is studied, and the results obtained setting 4, 6, 8 and 10 flowers/plant are compared.
In all cases, the fruit-setting rate was very high (87.2-97.9%) without variations in the yield treatments being detected.
The average weight of the fruits was slightly inferior in the plants where CPPU was applied to 8 or 10 flowers when compared to the fruit set of 4-6 flowers/plant.
There were no differences between the treatments for the °Brix content.
