Abstract:
The V Symposium on Protected Cultivation in Mild Winter Climates, which focused on Current Trends for Sustainable Technologies, was held in Cartagena and Almería on 7-11th March 2000. After the previous successful Symposium held in Antalya, Turkey, Dr.
Pedro F. Martínez and Dr.
Nicolás Castilla chose us, the Agrarian Production Department of Polytechnic University of Cartagena to organise the following one.
We hereby thank them for the confidence they showed in us.
The result has been three year of continuous hard work that culminated in the publication of the proceedings and a lot of new friends made.
Almost 200 participants, including scholarship and students, took part in the Symposium, which included 147 contributions (35 lectures and 112 papers). Both forms of presentation enabled the participants to discuss the most up-to-date research findings and meet their colleagues.
During the Symposium two technical excursions were organized and participants had the chance to get to know protected cultivation under the particular Mediterranean conditions of Southern Spain.
These volumes contain 126 original papers of all the lectures and posters presented at the Symposium revised, as necessary, following the suggestions of the Editorial Board.
We hope that the research results collected in this publication will be useful for everyone interested in this subject and will form the necessary basis for future research.
We do not want to finish this introduction without thanking everybody who collaborated in making the Symposium a success and without wishing to the University of Catania (Italy) team all the best for the next Symposium in 2002.
Dr.
Juan A. Fernández
Chairman of Organizing Committee
