LYCHEE AND LONGAN PRODUCTION IN THAILAND

Abstract:
Lychee and longan are among the leading fruit crops grown in Thailand. Although the total production in these two crops did not increased greatly in the last five years, however, an increase in planting acreage has been noticed along with good prospects in exporting of these crops. Lychee production is concentrated in the upper northern provinces where more than 80 percent are grown. The total production area of the whole country in 1997 was approximately 17,000 hectares with the total production of about 40,000 metric tons. Longan production is regarded to be more economically important to Thailand. It is always rated among the top three fruit for export. Longan production is also concentrated in the upper northern provinces. However, with the recent technology in regulating flowering and yield, increasing longan plantation is seen in the eastern and central regions. The total planting acreage was almost 48,000 hectares and the total production of about 230,000 metric tons. Most of the fresh lychee and longan are locally consumed, and the local market price of lychee is higher than that of longan. However, the country export earnings from fresh and processed longan is far greater than that from lychee. In 1997, Thailand exported fresh longan of 81,632 metric tons worth 339 millions U.S. dollars, whereas the country exported fresh lychee fruits of 11,158 metric tons worth only 52 millions U.S. dollars.
