Abstract:
The Australian Longan Industry is small by world standards and produces between 300 to 1000 tonnes of fruit each season.
This is expected to grow rapidly with 72, 000 trees planted mainly over the last five years.
Fruit is produced from January to May.
The long harvest season is due to the geographic spread of the industry from north Queensland to New South Wales and the spread of cultivars Kohala to Biew Kiew.
The Longan industry is represented by the Longan Association Australia Incorporated which sponsors a number of activities for members and has a widely distributed newsletter.
The Association, the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation and the Queensland Horticultural Institute support a number of research projects for longan.
These include nutritional studies, post harvest work to find an alternative treatment to sulphur dioxide fumigation and market research for the Australian domestic market.
The poster sets out contact details for the longan association, information on growing and handling systems in Australia and details of research work.
