ISHS Acta Horticulturae 558: I International Symposium on Litchi and Longan

EFFECTS OF GIRDLING AND GROWTH RETARDANTS ON FLOWERING AND FRUITING OF LITCHI IN MAURITIUS

Author:   N. Ramburn
Keywords:   flowering, girdling, growth regulators, Litchi chinensis
Abstract:
Girdling of branches 3 to 4 cm in diameter with hardened flush in May or foliar application of 0.5 g paclobutrazol + 0.4 g of ethephon per litre promoted flowering in unproductive litchi trees of cultivar Tai So in Mauritius. Fruiting was consistent on girdled branches, but erratic on branches with growth retardant. Therefore, while flowering can be induced every year in Mauritius, fruit setting still remains a problem.
