Abstract:
This paper reports on cell wall Ca in the pericarp of litchi cultivars susceptible and resistant to fruit cracking.
Contents of Ca in the cell wall as pectin-bound Ca in various parts of the pericarp were higher in the cracking-resistant ‘Huaizhi’ than in the cracking-susceptible 'Nuomici'. However, X-ray microscopic analysis of Ca in pericarp revealed a large number of Ca-rich cells in the epidermis of ‘Nuomici’, while in ‘Huaizhi’, Ca-rich cells were few.
The results suggests that there is difference in the mobilization of Ca to construct cell walls between ‘Nuomici’ and ‘Huaizhi’, the amount Ca being lower in ‘Nuomici’ than in ‘Huaizhi’.
