Abstract:
This paper reports a selection program for aborted-seeded longan cultivars, which has been carried out for over 30 years.
Five promising strains bearing aborted-seeded fruits, namely 'Minjiao No.1', 'Minjiao No. 2', 'Minjiao No. 3', 'Minjiao No. 4' and 'Minjiao No. 5', have been selected.
Among them, 'Minjiao No. 4' is the most promising because of its stable and higher rate of seed abortion, larger fruit, thicker aril, superior quality and higher yield in its vegetative progenies.
Some selected strains although aborted-seeded having defects, e.g. lower yield, smaller and uneven fruit sized or lower and unstable seed abortion rate.
These drawbacks could be overcome by improved irrigation and fertilization, flower and fruit thinning, and application of plant growth regulators.
