Abstract:
A hazelnut cultivar trial was established in the lower Rio Negro valley in 1978 using plants from Italy, France, and local sources to identify the best-adapted cultivars.
The data recorded included phenological data, number of catkins, yield, nut weight, kernel weight, and percent kernel.
The best cultivars for the in-shell market are 'Fertile de Coutard' and 'Segorbe', and the best for the kernel market are 'Tonda di Giffoni', 'Riccia di Talanico', 'Tonda Romana' and 'Camponica'. The local material in the collection was identified by examining the nuts and husks, and comparing them to those of the cultivars introduced from Italy and France.
Of the 20 introductions obtained from Argentine nurseries under different names, 13 were identified as 'Fertile de Coutard'. The local selection 'Mar del Plata' is interesting for its excellent organoleptic qualities and nut appearance, as well as for its good pollen production and late pollen shed.
There are now 250 ha of hazelnut orchards in the region, and the nuts will be sold on the domestic market.
