Abstract:
The policies of the European Union (EU) are increasingly affecting farmers’ decisions and income.
Hazelnut production is not an exception as is confirmed by the EU policy measures that bring direct subsidies to farmers.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the main EU policies that affect the Italian hazelnut sector and to evaluate their impact on the budgets of farms.
The first part of the paper provides a survey of the agricultural policies concerning the Italian hazelnut sector, highlighting the types and the amounts of related payments.
The second part describes two typical farms that represent the hazelnut production pattern in one of the main Italian production areas.
These model farms are used to evaluate the impact of the policies on the farms’ income and to analyze the farms’ profitability in joining the different measures.
In the last part, results obtained from the empirical analysis enabled us to formulate some comments about the actual and future competitiveness of the Italian hazelnut sector.
