HAZELNUT PRODUCTION WITHOUT THE USE OF BROAD SPECTRUM DISRUPTIVE INSECTICIDES: THEORY AND PRACTICE

Author:   M.T. AliNiazee
Keywords:   hazelnut pests, insect pest management, IPM, sustainable agriculture, Corylus avellana, filbert.
Abstract:
The number of broad spectrum synthetic organic insecticides available for use on hazelnuts has declined during the past ten years. Conversely, the research database on the biology, ecology, and management of pests and natural enemies and the disruptive impact of insecticide usage in the hazelnut system has increased substantially. As a result, I believe that production of hazelnut without the use of harsh broad spectrum pesticides is now possible. In this paper, I review the research data of the past five years dealing with “soft pesticides” and “biological control” leading to this approach both in theory and practice.
