Abstract:
In Cravanzana (Cuneo, Italy), two training systems were compared using eight hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) genotypes (‘Tonda Gentile delle Langhe’, ‘Daria’, and selections101, 3L, 119, 123F, 104F and G1). The training systems were the ‘free vase’ system (or open center vase), in which the trees grow on a single trunk, and the ‘double hedge’ system (or hedgerow) that consists of two trunks that are spaced 0.40 m apart and lean out at an angle of 30° on opposite sides of the row.
In the free vase system, 666 trees per hectare (5 x 3 m) were planted, while in the double hedge system, 833 x 2 trees per hectare (5 x 2.4 m) were planted.
Yield per tree, nut and kernel weight, and percent kernel were measured from 1995 to 1999. The double hedge system had higher yield per tree and yields per hectare for all cultivars and selections.
For each variety, few differences between the two training systems were observed for nut size, kernel size and percent kernel.
