Abstract:
In Romania, simple layering is used to propagate hazelnut (Corylus avellana) because of its technical and economic advantages.
Between 26,000 and 29,600 layers per ha are obtained, but 46,400-66,800 layers per ha could be obtained using stool layering with girdling.
Trees from stool beds must be kept another year to encourage growth prior to planting them in the orchard.
Grafting in hazelnuts is a less frequently used form of propagation, first of all because of the hazelnut’s capacity to produce numerous suckers, and on the other hand the technical and environmental demands during and after grafting.
We obtained good results (62.7-68.7% success rate) during June using the 'chip-budding' method.
Grafting during winter was also successful using the 'whip and tongue' and 'cleft' grafting methods; callus formed on 86.8-95.7% of the graft unions.
