EFFECT OF FORCING SOLUTION COMPOSITION ON BUDBREAK AND SHOOT ELONGATION OF FOUR HYBRID HAZELNUT GENOTYPES

Abstract:
The effects of forcing solution composition on the timing and amount of budbreak and the subsequent shoot elongation of four C. americana x C. avellana hybrid hazelnut genotypes was investigated. Vegetative shoots were collected in October, stored in a cold room at 4 °C, and in December placed in glass jars containing (a) control (water), (b) forcing solution (2% sucrose + 200 mg 8-hydroxyquinoline citrate/L), (c) forcing solution + 10 ppm GA3, or (d) forcing solution + 50 ppm GA3. No budbreak was observed in the water control in 20 days. GA3 in the forcing solution hastened budbreak, enhanced percentage budbreak, and promoted shoot elongation, and the effect was greater in the 50 ppm treatment than in the 10 ppm treatment. The shoots obtained were suitable for propagation in vitro and by cuttings.
