Abstract:
In order to improve some characters of 'Tombul' hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.), a breeding program based on hybridization was initiated in 1981. To date, about 15,000 hybrid seedlings have been generated.
Seedlings were subjected to two stages of selection using a "weighted scoring" method.
Evaluation was based on ten traits in the first stage and 23 traits in the second stage.
Eight promising selections were placed in yield trials, and yields recorded for three years.
Four high-yielding candidates (K-1-1, K-19-6, K-26-3 and K-24-2) are proposed for release as new cultivars.
