Abstract:
Hazelnut cultivation in India is in a primitive stage.
Seedling trees are found growing wild in Shimla, Kinnaur and Chamba districts of Himachal Pradesh, a northwestern hilly state.
Only recently have some efforts been made to survey seedling tree stands of this important nut to select superior strains.
This paper presents observations on growth, flower and fruit characters of 30 superior hazelnut seedling trees growing in the Shimla district at 2000 m above sea level.
Considerable variation was observed with respect to leaf area, number of nuts per cluster, physico-chemical characters of nuts and kernels and nut yield per tree.
The present status and future prospects for hazelnut cultivation in India are also discussed.
