ISHS Acta Horticulturae 556: V International Congress on Hazelnut

PROMISING HAZELNUT SELECTION DUCALOVICI 30/96

Authors:   M. Mitrovic, M. Stanisavljevic, Z. Tesovic
Keywords:   Corylus avellana, filbert, nut quality, kernel percentage
Abstract:
Corylus avellana grows wild in a large number of forest stands in Yugoslavia. Nuts harvested from these wild stands supplement those produced in orchards, as hazelnuts have been in short supply. The wild hazelnut populations are heterogeneous for many characteristics, including vigor, nut size, yield, and nut quality. Desirable characteristics in new selections include high yield, high quality, and smaller-sized nuts, which are all requirements of the confectionery industry. This paper describes superior selection Ducalovici 30/96, which is distinguished by abundant cropping, a nut mass of 2.31 g, and a kernel percentage of 38.6%. The shell is moderately firm. The kernel has an excellent flavor. The bush is moderately vigorous and has a wide crown with a round, somewhat flattened top.
