Abstract:
The Fruit and Grape Research Centre in Cacak has had a collection of hazelnut cultivars for quite a long time now.
Although the list of recommended cultivars is rather old, it has been gradually updated.
Large-fruited hazelnut cultivars are being replaced by new ones with round nuts of smaller size to meet the requirements of the confectionery industry.
The U.S. cv.
Ennis was also introduced for evaluation.
Our preliminary investigations show that 'Ennis' performs excellently under the agroecological conditions of Cacak.
It flowers somewhat later than most cultivars, on average in the first ten days of March.
The nuts are large and attractive, averaging 4.2 g in mass, and have a kernel percentage of 48.6%. The shell is moderately firm and light brown with pronounced darker-colored stripes.
The tree is moderately vigorous and has few suckers.
It has been an abundant cropper.
