Abstract:
The southern coast of Crimea is 105 km long and stretches from Cape Aiya in the west to the town of Alushta in the east.
We made multiple observations of hazelnuts growing in different conditions on the south coast of Crimea.
The most suitable are moderately moist, moderately stony, light clay soils with a slightly alkaline pH. The annual rainfall must be one meter or more. Corylus avellana grows well on slopes of 15-20%, and west and northwest facing slopes are best because here leaf budbreak is delayed by 2-3 weeks.
The catkins of the trees growing at the bottom of southern slopes can be damaged by cold air.
The very frost resistant and high-yielding 'Panakhessky' appears especially promising for the south coast of Crimea.
