Abstract:
Turkey is the largest hazelnut producer in the world. However, hazelnut yield is quite low. The low yield has a negative effect on the revenue of hazelnut farmers and it lessens the competing power of Turkey in international markets. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of factors that have effect on hazelnut yield at the farm level the using Cobb-Douglas production function. Data was collected from 79 hazelnut producers selected in Ordu and Giresun provinces by means of interviews. In the present model, hazelnut productivity per decare was the dependent variable. The size of hazelnut orchards, the amount of labor utilized, the age of hazelnut orchards, the number of orchards, and fertilizer and pesticide expenses were explanatory variables. The model demonstrated that in order to increase hazelnut yields in Turkey, the number of orchards per hectare should be decreased, old hazelnut orchards removed, and new hazelnut orchards established in more suitable growing areas. In addition, increased applications of new fertilizers and pesticides along with other cultural practices must be timed appropriately.
