Abstract:
In a hazelnut breeding program, ‘Tonda Gentile delle Langhe’ (TGL) was crossed with several Italian and foreign cultivars, and some of the selected hybrids have large nut size and attractive appearance, making them suitable for the in-shell market.
The five most interesting hybrids were placed in a replicated planting and their production was evaluated.
Yield and nut characters were examined for three years.
In 1999, sensory evaluation was performed on fresh and roasted nuts using a panel with 20 assessors.
Selection ‘TGL x Barcelona 6’ had the best horticultural performance - high yield and low susceptibility to bud mite.
Sensory evaluation showed that selection ‘TGL x Lansing 35’ has the most attractive nuts.
Ratings for degree of liking were significantly different among the hybrids.
The most appreciated raw nuts were those of selection ‘ TGL x Lansing 35’ and ‘TGL x Lansing 39’, while the kernels of ‘TGL x Lansing 35’ and ‘Tonda Gentile delle Langhe’ were rated best after roasting.
