Abstract:
The German market has seen a dramatic change in retailing, of all food including fresh onions, during the last ten years.
In an incredible concentration of extremely large retail groups took place.
Nowadays no more than eight companies share more than 80% of all food retailing.
They continue to expand due to retail capacities in Germany already exceeding actual demand and consumption, into neighbouring countries such as Austria, Italy, Spain, and to the East, especially into Poland, Czechia, Hungary, but also into Russia and even into the United States and China with their own branches, stores, and supermarkets.
So, you can imagine the purchasing power of these eight companies and the purchasing pressure they are able to exert, particularily in view of the continuous overproduction and oversupply in nearly all food items.
