SUBSTRATES FOR TOBACCO TRANSPLANTS PRODUCTION IN FLOAT SYSTEM

Authors:   G. Carrasco, P. Rebolledo, P. Valverde, M. Urrestarazu
Keywords:   floating system, soilless culture, seedlings, tobacco transplant, growing medium.
Abstract:
The effect of different substrate types and mixtures utilized in the direct-seeded float system in greenhouse over the quality of tobacco transplants and crop yields was evaluated. Three trials were carried out under cold greenhouse conditions at South Central Chile (35° 26’ S. L., 71° 85’ W. L.) in winter - spring 1997 and 1998. Pelleted seeds of cv. Burley tobacco were sown in styrofoam trays filled with different substrates. The treatments were a commercial mixture, composted pine wood bark (with and without CaCO3), peat, perlite, vermiculite and the mixture of them in different ratios. Thirty days after sowing, the emergence in all treatments was over 61%, except in treatments of pine without CaCO3. Stem diameter of transplants was similar in all substrates. No differences in growth and yield were found between treatments when tobacco transplants were established in soil.
