CONTROL OF STORAGE ROTS OF WASHINGTON NAVEL ORANGES AND MINNEOLA BY A COMBINATION OF YEAST ANTAGONIST AND THIABENDAZOLE

Abstract:
Citrus production in Turkey has greatly increased and reached 1.795 million tonnes in 1998. Orange and tangelo fruits are not suitable for long-term storage, but an appropriate harvest time enables orange to be stored for 2-4 months at 4°C and 85-90% relative humidity (Dundar, 1988).

Important factors affecting citrus quality are weight loss and rot development during storage (Gürgen et al., 1984). Droby et al. (1989) studied the storage of grapefruit with Debaryomyces hansenii yeast. Chalutz et al. (1989) found this yeast effective in protecting citrus during storage.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of a yeast (Candida oleophila) and TBZ on storage of Minneola tangelo (MT) and Washington Navel (WN) orange.
